What is European law?
The right of the European Union or European or Community law is the set of laws and principles that govern the functioning of the European Union. It is a right distinct from international law and the domestic law of the Member States.
The European Union is an international organization that goes beyond the simple cooperation between the States that form it, because it constitutes a project of political union. For this reason, the States, by joining the project ratifying the treaties of the Union, are giving the EU and its institutions competence in the matters that are included in said treaties. They are also assuming that the rules that govern that international organization, that is, the norms of European law, will also be applicable in the Member States themselves.
European law has different sources or types of laws. These are divided into two large groups. On the one hand, the binding rules that are the Regulations, the Directives and the Decisions. On the other hand, non-binding standards, which are Recommendations and Opinions. The regulations and directives have a universal scope, that is, they are addressed to all the Member States of the European Union, and all have a duty to comply with them. However, the opinions are directed to one or more specific States.
